Pfizer, the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, announced today that it has entered into an agreement with pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company for the exclusive rights to market its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra for sale through its website.

Viagra is the first medication to treat erectile dysfunction and is widely recognized as the best-selling prescription drug in the world, generating $1.7 billion in sales in the U. S. in 2012. Pfizer’s Viagra is an older and more effective version of Pfizer’s blockbuster Viagra. Viagra is sold over-the-counter, and is a prescription-only medication for men with erectile dysfunction. Pfizer currently markets its Viagra for sale through its website.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra, the first drug to hit the US market since the late 1990s, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra's maker, Pfizer, said Friday that its Viagra sales in the US were $7 billion and the company is selling about 10 percent of its product for $2.5 billion in the US.
"Pfizer's Viagra is a revolutionary product for men that has proven to be a game-changer for millions of men suffering from erectile dysfunction," the FDA said in a statement.
The move comes as the US health care system continues to face rising concerns about the efficacy and safety of older and less-established drugs.
The FDA has approved a number of other drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, including Revatio, a drug that has already been approved by the FDA for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
However, the FDA has not approved any other drugs for erectile dysfunction, the agency said.
Viagra is sold under the brand name Revatio, while Viagra is sold under the generic name sildenafil.
Pfizer, which makes the original Viagra, is the developer of the drug and produces it in its New York headquarters.
The FDA has said that it has approved Viagra for use in patients over 65. It is not yet clear how many men may need the drug, but Pfizer is pressing for an increase in its sales in the US, where Viagra is the most common brand-name drug, and has said that the US will begin selling a generic version of the drug in the next few years.
Pfizer said in a statement it is currently reviewing its approval process, and that it has not made any "decision-making decisions" about the drug.
Sildenafil, the generic name for Viagra, is the company's most widely used drug.
"Pfizer has been working with the FDA to determine whether it is safe and appropriate to sell sildenafil over the counter in the US," a Pfizer spokesperson told the New York Times.
In June, the FDA approved the first generic version of sildenafil to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a type of heart disease.
The FDA approved sildenafil in September for a second-generation drug for erectile dysfunction.
A company spokesman said: "The FDA continues to work closely with manufacturers and regulatory authorities to determine whether sildenafil is a safe and appropriate treatment for patients in the US with erectile dysfunction."

The Food and Drug Administration will soon approve a $25 million recall of all products containing the drug sildenafil citrate (Viagra) since its sale was halted on Thursday. The FDA said the recall was based on information provided to The Associated Press. Sildenafil is also used to treat the male sexual disorder, also known as ED, in men, including men who are taking the medication for impotence.
The drug has been associated with a higher risk of death in men with heart problems. Sildenafil is also known to be associated with an increased risk of stroke in people who take nitrates for heart failure. The Food and Drug Administration says it’s continuing the review process.
“The FDA’s review of this drug is a critical step in the FDA’s review process,” said Janet Woodcock, M. D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “This review is designed to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and adverse effects of the drug and provide further information to the FDA about whether it is appropriate for an individual patient.”
The FDA said it is reviewing the drug’s labeling and will provide more information as it becomes available. The FDA said the review is an independent effort, unlike those of drug manufacturers that manufacture the drug. In order to make such information available to the public, the drug’s maker must submit a drug information supplement to the FDA’s office in Washington, D. C.
The drug is sold under brand names as Viagra (sildenafil citrate), Revatio (dapoxetine), Stendra (avanafil), and Viagra Connect (sildenafil and tadalafil). In August 2012, FDA said it would begin marketing sildenafil at a price of $5 per tablet. It will be available in four different strengths: 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, and 100 mg. Currently, Viagra Connect is the most commonly prescribed medication for ED.
The FDA has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recall.
Viagra will be available from pharmacies nationwide. In addition to its FDA-approved use, the drug has been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration. FDA officials said the FDA has received reports of serious adverse events related to the recall. FDA officials also warned consumers not to take sildenafil if they had a heart attack, stroke or heart-related condition.
“Health care professionals and patients should discuss this recall with their doctors and pharmacists immediately,” Woodcock said. “We are committed to identifying and contacting all those impacted by this recall and taking appropriate steps to prevent further harm.”
The drug is available to purchase at retail pharmacy chains nationwide. It is available for sale at a slightly lower price than the brand-name drug. In May 2013, the FDA recalled a supply of Viagra Connect at a pharmacy in San Francisco. Sildenafil has been available for sale at a slightly lower price than the brand-name drug. FDA officials said they are working to identify and treat the underlying causes of the recalled product. Sildenafil is used to treat the male sexual disorder in people, including men who are taking the medication for impotence.“The FDA has a responsibility to provide safe and effective treatments for patients and physicians,” Woodcock said. “These products will not be sold for personal use or for the use of others.”
